Reverse trick-or-treating

Gatherings with Purpose | Holidays
By Gatherings Gal October 3, 2013

Halloween is just around the corner, which means it's trick-or-treating time. But, if you are looking for a way to share the importance of giving back with your children, turn it on its head with reverse trick-or-treating.

Start a new tradition this year by delivering treats to shut-ins, nursing homes or homeless shelters. Your kids can dress in costumes and brighten someone's day.

This is a great treat for the folks you are treating and for you - you'll know you made a difference.

If you are looking for other ways to add giving to your gathering, check out more ideas.

Sound off: How will you give back this October?

Simple ways to add purpose on July 4

Gatherings with Purpose | Holidays

July 4 is one of my favorite holidays! I love the weather, the barbeques, the fireworks and the time with family.
On America's birthday, you can give back to your country and community with simple acts of service. Here are a few ideas to add giving to your gathering:
  • If you are gathering in a park or public area, take 20 minutes as a group to pick up trash and clean up your surroundings. There's no better gift than a clean and litter-free area for the next family.
  • Recognize those who fight for our freedom. Write cards to military men and women serving overseas or assemble goodie bags to deliver to a local veteran's organization like the VFW.
  • Don't forget the brave men and woman who serve as police officers and fire fighters. Many of them are still working on the holiday. Drop off extra treats to thank them for helping keep your community safe.

With just a little planning, you can celebrate America's birthday by giving back.

Sound off: How do you give back to your community?
