Baseball is a family affair for Modern Woodmen representative Norman Kohn, Round Rock, Texas. His Modern Woodmen family that is.
Every summer several local Modern Woodmen camps get together for a semiprofessional baseball game preceded by an enormous tailgate party. A camp is a local chapter of Modern Woodmen members who meet monthly for social, educational and/or volunteer opportunities.
Norman and other camp leaders cook hot dogs and hamburgers for their guests. In addition to the food, tailgaters enjoy mingling with each other before the game. They can win door prizes, and all the kids take home stickers, gliders and other fun items.
“I enjoy cooking, but I also like meeting and greeting the families that come,” says Norman. “We have a much closer relationship with our members than other financial services organizations. We’re really like family.”
Once the tailgaters have had their fill they all proceed into The Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express. The group enjoys a great discount thanks in part to Modern Woodmen. They sit together, continue socializing and occasionally even watch the game. The family-oriented stadium has climbing walls, basketball courts and swimming pools for their fans to enjoy – even while the game is going on.
“It’s a fun place,” says Norman. “Everyone has a great time.”
The tailgate party has been an annual event for almost a decade. Several hundred Modern Woodmen members and guests enjoy this activity each year.
As American as baseball and pecan pie
OK, that’s not exactly how the saying goes. But Norman can’t resist his wife’s chocolate pecan pie. Learn how to make it.
