Shower Activities

Bridal and baby showers are gatherings with a specific purpose. They honor the bride or expectant mother and help her prepare for marriage or motherhood.

Most showers last about two hours and follow this general schedule:

  1. Greet guests as they arrive and serve refreshments or appetizers. Encourage them to assemble in a large circle, allowing everyone to see everyone else.

  2. Have the guests introduce themselves around the circle and explain how they know the honoree. Remember, many of the guests may not know one another.

  3. Play a few shower games to encourage interaction.

  4. After everyone has a chance to get food, the honoree can open her gifts. Assign someone to record each gift and the giver to prevent confusion when writing thank-you notes.

  5. After the gifts are opened, the guests can chat as the honoree circulates and talks to all.

How Sweet it Is

Once everyone is assembled, pass around a dish filled with mints, Gummi bears, Smarties candies and chocolate candies. Ask the guests to choose one of the sweets. Then ask each person to share advice based on the type of candy he or she chose:

Mint =

Good advice is worth a mint. Please give the bride-to-be a tip for a happy marriage.

Gummi bear =

Share the pet names for you and your spouse or significant other.

Chocolate =

Chocolate, roses and diamonds are some things women like. Please share suggestions regarding what men like.

Smarties =

You're smart enough to choose to share any of the above!!

Scramble and Spell

Give invitees paper and pencil. Have them write the first and last names of the bride and groom at the top of a sheet of paper. Then have them rearrange the letters in the words to spell as many words as possible within a time limit.

Go around the room having everyone read their lists. Everyone should cross off words that are duplicated. The person with the most words wins. (Limit the game to the couple's first or last names if the names are too long.)

The Retrieval Challenge

Partially fill a large glass bowl with uncooked rice and a handful of tiny safety pins (closed). Blindfold the contestants and have them try to retrieve the pins from the rice with one hand. Each person gets one minute. The person who removes the most pins wins.

The Groom

Prior to the shower, someone contacts the groom and asks him a list of 10-15 questions about himself and his bride-to-be. Be sure that whatever you ask him remains a secret so that the bride doesn't know ahead of time. Write out each question on a 3x5 index card, and write the groom's answers on the back.

Some types of questions can be:
1. What is the groom's favorite food?
2. If the groom were a superhero, who would he be?
3. What was the date of your first kiss, first date?
4. Where did you go on your first date?
5. What animal would the groom compare you to? Get creative!

At the shower, read the questions to the attendees. Each person then writes down how many he/she thinks the bride will get right (to get the question right, the bride mus
