Modern Woodmen of America

Crafts, Activities and Games Galore!

Tissue Paper Flowers
To make a flower you will need pastel-colored tissue paper, pipe cleaners, scissors and a ruler.

Cut tissue paper into rectangles of desired size. Stack four to six pieces of tissue paper. You can use the same color or different colors. Accordion pleat the tissue paper working from the long side. Wind one end of the pipe cleaner around the middle of the accordion-pleated tissue paper. Gently separate each layer pulling upward toward the middle of the flower. You can make one or an entire bouquet!

Friendship Bracelets
To share your affection on your wrist, you will need colored embroidery thread and tape.

Gather six 24-inch strands of embroidery thread. Hold the strands together with the ends matched up and tie an overhand knot one inch from an end. Tape the knot to a tabletop (or anchor it in a closed drawer). Holding the free end, twist the bunch repeatedly in the same direction until it is tightly wound.

Pinch the twisted band in the center and fold it in half so that the free end matches up with the knotted end. Release the center, and the band will automatically twist back on itself. Slip the ends through the loop (the pinch point) at the opposite end of the band and tie a knot to secure the bracelet.  Lastly, knot again and trim the ends of the bracelet.

Egg Carton Flowers
For this activity you will need cardboard egg cartons, paint or markers and pipe cleaners.

Cut the cups away from the rest of the egg carton. Then cut four to six petals on each flower so that it resembles a tulip. Bend and curl petals anyway you think looks best. Poke a hole through the center of the cup and thread the pipe cleaner through the hole. Knot the pipe cleaner to create the stem. Use more pipe cleaners to bend and shape leaves and attach them to the stem by twisting on. You are now ready to decorate your flower with paint or markers.

Ladybug Magnet
You will need two colors of craft foam (red and black), a hole punch, scissors, a pen, two slightly different-sized circular objects to trace (optional), tacky glue and a heavy-duty magnet.

Trace around the smaller object onto the black craft foam and cut it out. Repeat this process around the larger object onto the red craft foam and cut it out. Cut the red circle in half, but not all the way, to create a slit. Use the hole punch to punch out black spots for the ladybug. Cut a shape for the head of the ladybug (looks like a half circle). Glue the pieces together with the red craft foam on top of the black craft foam and the head in front. Glue the magnet on the back of your bug and let it dry before using.

Homemade Placemats
Use a collage of your child's favorite things to make their very own placemat!

You will need construction paper, card stock or poster board, one roll of contact paper, a glue stick, photos and any other optional craft supplies such as stickers, markers, crayons, etc.

First, have your children select and cut photographs and/or magazine pictures. Attach the pictures to the paper using a glue stick. Finish decorating the placemat with markers, stickers and drawings. Don't forget to write the child’s name with bold letters. When everything on the placemat is attached and dry, cover the placemat on both sides using the contact paper, following the directions on the package.
